79-year-old woman enters Texas triathlon

June 5, 2007

AUSTIN, Texas, June 4 Phyllis Mann will become the oldest woman to compete in the Danskin Women’s Triathlon in Austin, Texas, at the age of 79.

“Anybody can do this at any age, but you really have to want to do it, and you have to want to do the training,” said Mann, who live in Beaumont, Texas. Mann has been doing triathlons since she was 74, the Austin American-Statesman reported Monday. She started after her daughter, Tracy Erickson of Austin, described the race to her.

“I said ‘Gosh, that sounds like something I’d like to do,’” said Mann. The event usually draws about 3,000 female athletes and is held in eight cities across the country.

“We refer to it as an estrogen fest,” said Erickson, who is the breast-feeding coordinator for the state ‘ s Women, Infants and Children program. “We just love the concept and supporting other women. It’s just such an empowering event. It turns everyone into an athlete.”
