NYC Lights Up Holiday Season With Tree In Rockefeller Center

New York, NY (AHN) – The New York city holiday season kicked off Wednesday night with the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree.

Christmas tree admirers came from across the globe and witnessed the 74th lighting of the city’s most famous tree, an 88-foot Norway spruce..

Al Roker and Ann Curry from NBC’s “Today” show hosted the event that had people packed in Midtown Manhattan hoping to catch a glimpse of the festivities.

The two hour event which aired on NBC had entertainers such as NBC’s “30 Rock” stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey doing presenting duties. While entertainers Martina McBride, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Bette Midler and Sting lent their talents to the broadcast.

Even Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand giving his support to the night which drew people from Florida, California, and parts of Europe.

Sarah Shott, who traveled with her mother from Tresckow, PA by bus to watch the ceremony for the first time says, “It’s just such an experience being here with everyone,” said.

Despite the oohs and ahhs by the crowd looking at the tree and its twinking lights, the night was magical all around. Amid the festivities of the night Ahyn Flanagan, 35, was surprised by her boyfriend Felix Ortiz,
49, when he surprised her with a 3-carat diamond ring and got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.

“I was so excited about the tree. Then he popped the question. It was great – and a total surprise,” said Flanagan, who said yes.
