US sorry over deliberate sex infections in Guatemala

The United States government has apologised for deliberately infecting hundreds of people in Guatemala with gonorrhoea and syphilis as part of medical tests more than 60 years ago.

Many of the infected were mentally ill patients and prisoners – none of whom gave their consent.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has condemned the research as unethical and reprehensible.

At the time, the US wanted to test vaccines against venereal diseases.

Homeless Haitians Told Not to Flee to U.S.

by James C. Mckinley Jr

MIAMI — America has a message for the millions of Haitians left homeless and destitute by last week’s earthquake: Do not try to come to the United States.

Every day, a United States Air Force cargo plane specially equipped with radio transmitters flies for five hours over the devastated country, broadcasting news and a recorded message from Raymond Joseph, Haiti’s ambassador in Washington.

“Listen, don’t rush on boats to leave the country,” Mr. Joseph says in Creole, according to a transcript released by the Pentagon. “If you do that, we’ll all have even worse problems. Because, I’ll be honest with you: If you think you will reach the U.S. and all the doors will be wide open to you, that’s not at all the case. And they will intercept you right on the water and send you back home where you came from.”

Homeland Security and Defense Department officials say they are taking a hard line to avert a mass exodus from the island that could lead to deaths at sea or a refugee crisis in South Florida. Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, is about 700 miles from Miami.

Japanese Whalers Ram And Sink Sea Shepherd Ship

Sydney, Antarctic Territory waters, Australia (AHN) – The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says its vessel was sliced in half in by Japanese whalers operating in Australia’s Antarctic Territory waters, but no one was harmed.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says Japanese whalers rammed its vessel and sliced it in half. All six crew members were rescued and no one was harmed, according to reports.

This is just another chapter in an ongoing war between the two sides. The Sea Conservation Society wants the Japanese to stop harvesting whales. Over the years, the confrontations have escalated on the seas around the Antarctic, reports said.

According to a reported statement by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a Japanese vessel alongside the Nisshin Maru whaler slammed into the activists’ high-tech speed boat, the Ady Gil, slicing off a piece of it. Reports said the boat is unsalvageable. The six member crew (five from New Zealand and one from the Netherlands) were rescued by another Society Vessel (the Bob Barker), reports said.

The killing of Whales needs to stop.

Portland Water Bureau warns of E coli contamination in tap water

By David Liu

Residents whose tap water is provided by Portland Water Bureau, Burlington, Palatine Hill, and Valley View Water District should not drink tap water without boiling it first because tap water in these districts are potentially contaminated by harmful bacteria, Portland Water Bureau said in a public notice posted on its website on Nov 28.

The notice was issued because E. coli was detected in water samples collected from Reservoir 3 in Washington Park during a routine water testing on Wednesday Nov 25,  E coli contamination in Reservoir was confirmed on Nov 27.

Ingestion of food and water tainted with E coli may result in an illness with symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms.  At high risk for the illness are infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune system such as cancer and HIV patients.

It remains unknown what specific strain the E coli is.  Most strains of E coli are harmless, but it is unknown whether this strain is E coli O157:H7, which is a pathogen that can cause E coli illness.  Portland Water Bureau did not report any case of E coli infection due to the contamination.

“The affected area includes much of the City of Portland west of the Willamette River and customers who receive water bills from the palatine Hill Water District, Valley View Water District and Burlington Water District,” PWB said in a statement.

A Momment Of Silence

The Piehole has been silenced in honor of Ted Kennedy who passed away long before his time. To what else but cancer. He fought long and hard for health care and health care reform. It’s a shame he won’t be with us
when it does finally get passed.

Our country and it’s people lost someone who made all of our lives better.

You Sir, are missed already. Rest in Peace.
